It is an auspicious day today. Not just because it is December and LeChallenge. Not only is it my first blog post for a few weeks, but here I am blogging about "space" the day the British astronaut Major Tim Peake went into space. Very exciting, my dad and I watched in our own homes but chatted by phone. Technology at its best! I really should have gone with the space astronaut theme and used the fabric my friend Yvonne, quilting jet girl sent me recently.
Instead I decided to go with negative space. Now, negative space is quiet, calm, collected. Neutral. Not like me at all. I am definitely not quiet, calm or collected, nor I like to think negative. I am however drawn to negative space. It was the use of it in modern quilting that helped drew me back to sewing.
I loved this 1950s style Japanese kokka fabric by ayumil I first saw in Susan's A Canadian Abroad's blog and ig feed.
It is called light hearted fabric and I loved and ordered it from the Village Haberdashery. Without wanting to be too influenced by Susan, it just did lend itself to hexies.
And so a mug rug for my partner in the Modern Quilt Ireland it became. I backed it with some matchstick fabric I bought from Cindy in Fluffy Sheep Quilting. A present for Christmas, but not too Christmassy. I'll add in some Christmas flavoured latte sachets, and a couple of mini Green and Black chocolates. I think it matches my Orla Kiely mug, but its staying with me.
And oh yes, we always include a small tree decoration with our swap. This year I made an improvised hanging tree out of Liberty fabric, and backed it with a brushed brown and pink feather Liberty print.
So, this was multi tasking at its best. A link up with LeChallenge and my MQI Christmas swap all in the one post. I won't say Merry Christmas yet if you are a regular reader, but if you are new to me or popping over from Le Challenge, then Merry Christmas. And I hope to see you again in the New Year.

What a very cool theme; I am definitely partial to "space" but negative space is so appropriate for quilting. :)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, I just love hexagons.
ReplyDeleteOh I drool over the Liberty always. What a sweet hexie mug rug, and I like what you did in the negative space! Yum on the extras in with it!
ReplyDeleteWell what a happy place to be I love your mug rug and your tree both are so pretty! I'd love to see your jet girl fabric since I too just got some Marty went to Mars but didn't use it! Great use of space!
ReplyDeleteI like your fabric choices for the mug rug a lot (almost as much as I love your mug!) and the Christmas tree is so sweet I might try to make some today.
ReplyDeleteLooks great - I have yet to make the decoration so this weekend getting down to it and ready for the post on Monday - you're partner is going to be so pleased!
ReplyDeleteCute (as is the mug- definitely one to hang onto). I'm sure your swap partner will love it
