Writing From Whitehead, an Update

If this really was Writing From Whitehead I think the recipient would be getting rather impatient by now. The linkup for the flinish, sorry finished flimsy (hey, I have just invented a new word!) closes tomorrow, Easter Tuesday. I had progressed this far last Tuesday or so, but no further. Better link up anyhow before the linkup closes.

Maybe I am beating myself up too much. After all, I am working two quilts simultaneously, so I shouldn't be too worried. On the other hand, I look at how fast other quilts turn over their quilting, and I am definitely falling into the slow quilting department.

The Postcard From Sweden has rows numbered alphabetically (is that such a thing?) up to row O. That is 15 rows deep. I am currently pieced up to row I and have rows K and L ready to sew on to the main body. Three more still to go. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. A finish for this Friday for a Finish Or Not Friday link up? We will see. That was the plan for last week.

Of course real life gets in the way. There are things to do, people to see, places to go. Gardens to get ready. We are usually away over Easter. Ooops, don't want to say that, burglars might be stalking me. We were at home as always over Easter. The thing about being at home over Easter, is I spend time looking out the window at the garden, making plans and noticing things that need done. I like the garden to be tidied between St Patrick's Day, 17 March and Easter whenever that falls. My friend's mother used to say, the "good room" had to be kept tidy in case the Queen might come to visit. I thought she was slightly delusional. When would the Queen come to visit. The use of irony was lost rather on a 10 year old. Well, I like the garden to be tidy over Easter in case the Queen comes to visit! She didn't, but it was all ready for her. We even got a new garden seat, but it was rather cold on first try out as you can see!

I made an Easter wreath for the door. All our trips to USA over recent Easters, we had noticed how beautiful the Easter door wreaths were. This wouldn't be very common at home. I am starting a new tradition. I recycled the oasis door wreath from Christmas. The greenery came from the garden, and the flowers from the supermarket. Mrs Frugality is alive and well.

I also baked a cake, but it has been eaten already. I thought I might try a simnel cake, a traditional Easter cake, a light fruit cake. The cake is topped with marzipan and has marzipan balls to represent the apostles. This was vetoed by my daughter who decided chocolate cake, a la Mary Berry the queen of baking's chocolate cake recipe was the way to go. In a nod to Easter baking, she arranged some mini eggs on top as our marzipan apostles.

Today the fire is lit, so in a competition between sewing and knitting, I am afraid knitting in front of the fire wins hands down. Writing From Whitehead is to be continued, but for now, linking up with Sandra's mmmquilts link up.

  1. The PFS quilt is stunning and looks so good! It is on my 'to make one day' list. I hope the Queen doesn't come my way - my yard is in need of some serious attention. Hope the weather cooperates soon! And I agree with your daughter about the chocolate cake! :)

  2. Your quilts look amazing Helen!!
Yes its a day of knitting by the fire, although as Divis is out of the question we may tackle B&Q as I need compost to plant up my tiny tomato plants......in case the Queen comes ;)

  3. Both quilts float my boat!! So very pretty! Damn that queen...after all your tidying up too! It is that time of the year when we longingly (or not so longingly) want to get the garden whipped into shape!

  4. Judging your speed against others is completely irrelevant. I enjoy seeing all your progress and hearing about everything you are doing, and a bit of balance in the end is so much nicer.

  6. I do think you should be giving yourself a full pardon since you are technically writing to Post Cards From Sweden. Both are looking quite stunning. Slow and steady wins the race. The Easter wreath is beautiful! Actually one of the prettiest I've seen! I have to say, it was the Queen's loss for missing such a beautiful holiday decoration.

  7. I got so little done that I didn't even bother linking up. I'll have to fire away to the finish line.

  8. Your wreath is lovely! Full of fresh, spring flowers. I hope your neighbors noticed that you are starting this important new decorating trend, and give you credit for being the trendsetter. Whitehead Writing is coming along nicely, all the pieces in the right order. That's what counts. Otherwise, why follow a pattern at all, right?

  9. Fabulous, Helen. I love love love both of your quilt tops. FLINISH??? Really? Wreath at Easter? I have not noticed, but then I celebrated Easter with prayer and meditation. I am trying to behave myself so all that talk of cake, fruit, marzipan and chocolate has me drooling over my keyboard. I am just going to look at your lovely face, next to that beautiful wreath.

  10. With us being away over the long Easter weekend, nothing got done on PfS and now you're way ahead of me! I've not noticed any Easter wreaths in all the times I've been in Florida around or on Easter (which most of them do not get as a long weekend as we do, how odd, and annoying we found, as we'd banked on not much traffic on the drive down-WRONG). Maybe it's more of a northeastern thing? It's beautiful your wreath, as are both of your quilts, and your garden that's ready for the Queen. She'd better not contemplate a visit to Canada anytime soon to my house! I'd love a marzipan-topped Easter cake! We only got that at Christmas on my mum's fruitcake.

  11. Great Quilting works. Really Appreciable, need to learn lot of things from this

  12. Who cares if you are slower than some others? Both these quilts are so very lovely and this way you can enjoy them for a wee bit longer. The Queen would turn in horror from my garden at the moment - no tidying here until it stops being either freezing cold or pouring wet!
