Wedding Blues, and Greens

If you follow me on instagram you will have seen that I am beavering away at a wedding quilt for my son and his lovely fiancée. The wedding is getting closer but the quilt although getting bigger isn't big enough yet. Making a quilt is a lesson is spatial awareness. Bit like in Father Ted, big cow, close cow, little cow, faraway cow, or the other way round. Every time I sew like mad, and rattle off another half dozen or so blocks, I seem to be no nearer a finish.

The photo of the blocks laid out is really bad, sorry about that. I couldn't get one without the shadow of the sun. Not that I am complaining about the sun.

It has taken ages because I am trying to use a variety of blocks to keep the interest in the finished quilt. Simple squares and more complex squares, squares that rattle off and squares that take a little more thought. A representation of married life, if you will. To speed things up a little I have been making small easy squares production style. These little squares will fill in the gaps, and sewn together make bigger more complex squares. Again, a parody of married life.

I have had a birthday and the happy couple bought me books. I love books. One of the books is a book of American Civil War blocks and the personal stories behind these blocks. These blocks still hold true in modern colours and the historian in me loves the tales behind them. A follow up to our great holiday in the spring. There are lots of half square triangles here for me to follow up in the ombre quilt. I feel I must also point out in the realm of fairness that other books were available from the other son!!

Remember this time last year I took part in the New Bloggers' Quilt Hop? I really enjoyed it. I made lots of contacts, some for just the period of the hop and some who have become pen friends. They have moved beyond that virtual ~ they are not real people ~ to being real people. Well, it is that time of the year again. If you get a chance check out this year's blog hoppers. I will be. The links are as before through Yvonne, www.quiltingjetgirl , Cheryl, www.meadowmistdesigns , and Stephanie, www.latenightquilter . You will find all the links on their sites to the individual bloggers. The hop runs from today June 13th for four weeks.

  1. I love how all the blocks are coming together for the wedding quilt. I agree that piecing large quilts seems to take eons of time. If they don't like the quilt, you can send it to me, OK? LOL And thanks for letting everyone know about the start of the blog hop this year, I know the new bloggers are going to appreciate it!

  2. Love that wedding quilt Helen. I know that sometimes the larger quilts feel like they are going on and on, and regarding the sun...it is lovely but it does make photo taking a bit harder in it's brightness or shadows.

  8. Those are my kind of colours, and I love the symbolism you're putting into the construction of it. Hey that Civil War quilt book...maybe you could use some of your brown stash in making one or a couple (several, lol) of those blocks?!

  9. The quilt is looking great already and I like your 'many small blocks to make bigger ones' approach. Keep going!
