52 books in 52 weeks challenge - week 12

This week's book is Miss Carter's War by Sheila Hancock, a recently published book I have been meaning to read for the last few months. By luck, my book crossing friend Liz has read and reviewed it, so kindly passed it my way. Read her review too!

I had been looking forward to reading this but was filled with temerity, my last two books of choice were disappointing. Was this just a bad choice or am I becoming bad at choosing, or merely becoming a "more discerning reader"? I think it was just bad luck, but I was hopeful for this.

So often novels written by "celebrities" are disappointing, or not so much disappointing, as rather not terribly strong or well written storylines. Well, no need to be disappointed. The story line was good, a strong narrative ran throughout and the characters well rounded. The relationship between Miss Carter and Tony was very relaxed, the chemistry was good between them. The story also interweaved Marguerite's post war life with her experiences behind enemy lines with the SOE. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I would recommend this novel very much. It put me in mind of a novel I read several years ago which I recommended to everybody I met at the time "Diary of an Ordinary Woman" by Margaret Forster. It was as it said, the diary of an ordinary woman between the two wars, though this time it was based on a true story. Worth reading.

Next week's books is either "Nora Webster" by Colm Toibin or else "The House Where It Happened" by Martina Devlin. I think I'll probably read the Martina Devlin, its a library book and is due for return. I also find myself moving into genealogical mode again, and there is a very loose relevance with this book.
