Come On Ye Reds

"Come On Ye Reds"! Sorry for swearing, in our house that counts as a swear word, as sweary as the sweariest swear word you could ever swear. But sometimes a swear word just hits the spot and so it is today. Everything seems to be red at the moment, my medallion quilt for http://modernquiltguildireland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/medallion-qal-border-three.html.  my Ulster Rugby Quilt (aka Stand Up For The Ulster Men quilt) and now the bee blocks for June for the
http://modernquiltguildireland.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/modern-irish-scrappy-bee-june-block.html. These tiny red or white squares form a star constellation, can't wait to have a go at these for Irena.

I have another couple of rounds done on my quilt. I sat down with a tape measure and the back of an envelope to do some math, the last round of hour glass squares hadn't quite fitted, so I had fitted in a quick checkerboard round and another border.

The tape measure explained it all - 31" across one direction and 32" across the other. My husband took one look and said it was obvious. Two red and white striped borders were broader than the other and the clue was in the "rectangular shaped" corner squares. So obvious when pointed out to me. He did offer to help work out a strategy, but I'm still waiting. So here we go, back of an envelope and my normal strategy - make the plain borders a little on the generous side and then cut to fit. I now have a couple of extra hourglass squares to make, as it is a few borders further out now.

I am not sure what size to stop at. This won't be a bed quilt, but will hopefully will be a lap quilt for me. Perfect for the cooler summer evenings. I think the red and white combination looks lovely in a warm summer evening.

This WIP will link me up with Freshly Pieced WIP link up, hopefully,

My rugby quilt is trundling along nicely. I have a lovely little stack of red and black squares all finished. I play with them and spread them all over the floor when I have the house to myself. Another half dozen are nearly finished and then I think I will be ready to put them together. Only five months since Christmas, and the caravan season is well underway. Hope Matthew gets it soon!

Now a little respite from the red, a little pink, or rather a lot of pink. Last Sunday was the Cancer Research Race for Life and this year my sister, sister in law, myself and our three respective daughters took part. Hazel was keen that we did it the last few years, but between one thing and another we hadn't. Well, it was great fun and we will definitely do it next year. I am not one for public displays of emotion, and I must admit to finding it very touching and feeling quite emotional. There was a great feeling of camaraderie. We don't do many things all on our own and altogether if you know what I mean. It was fun. Maybe next year we will even dress up. And maybe next year I will make it up the hill to the Big House On The Hill (Stormont Castle, our Parliament Buildings) without the use of an inhaler or a mechanical winch. I think Alan was worried, he appeared and accompanied us to the top of the hill, but I survived to fight another day.

Knit wise I have finished my Oxford aran wool scarf, but no photos, my hair is a sight and today is has been a non make up day. Next time.

My book for this week is unfortunately still The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. Only a short book but not making great headway. Tonight however was my book group and we read Mari Jungstedt "The Dangerous Game" http://www.marijungstedt.se/en/
Mari Jungstedt is a Swedish journalist turned author and this is number 7 in her Superintendent Knutas series, in short it was a brilliant read. We all really enjoyed it. That's the end of book group until September and I will miss it over the summer. I came home with The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, that should keep me busy.

ps did anybody see Game of Thrones last night? I had never heard a continuity announcer say "severe violence warning" during the middle adverts. Slight understatement but brilliant. N Ireland scenery looks great too. http://interact.discovernorthernireland.com/gotexhibition#filminglocations
